Photo Contest
Photography is a enjoyable, creative hobby that Scouts and adults alike can enjoy. This contest is presented as a means for packs, troops, teams, and crews to introduce photography to youth members in a fun way.
Cascade Pacific Council hopes to share submitted photographs with members and the public in future publications such as Compass Points and other venues to share the talents of members, and showcase Scouting activities in local communities.
Unit Program Opportunities:
Entering this contest is a fun way to introduce photography to youth members, and provide educational programming for den, patrol, and troop meetings. As youth members plan to enter photographs in the contest, the unit may help them by planning special visitors or advancement focus at meetings.
Units may wish to engage merit badge counselors (check with your district advancement chairman for names) to offer introductory photography clinics or lessons.
Units may have connection to, or may create a relationship with a local professional photographer who would share a tour of their studio, or attend a unit meeting to show equipment used by photographers. This would also be an excellent way to introduce youth members to a possible career choice.
Scouts may also be interested in working on advancement requirements (a sampling shown here):
Tiger Cubs: Requirement 1d (family scrapbook); Electives 4 (display a picture), 16 (hobby-related)
Wolves: Achievement 4 (community-related); Elective 21 (digital-photography using computers)
Bears: Elective 22 (photography)
Webelos: Artist Activity Badge Requirements 2 (scrapbook), 10 (collages)
Boy Scouts: Photography Merit Badge
Units may also consider incorporating monthly themes and combining photography in some way:
Jul 2005: Cub Scout – Play Ball; Boy Scout – Pioneering
Aug 2005: Cub Scout – Campfire Tales & Traditions; Boy Scout – Shooting
Sep 2005: Cub Scout – Cub Scout Round-Up; Boy Scout – Sports
For example, photographs of Pioneering (July) projects would relate well to the Camping Fun contest category, as would Campfire Tales & Traditions (August).
