Scouters’ Mountain Taskforce
An Overview

The closure of Chief Obie Lodge due to deferred maintenance and lack of fire suppression has raised many questions about the future of the lodge and Scouters' Mountain as a whole. With the inclusion of the property into the urban growth boundary, which has increased encroachment issues and valuations, the number of questions increased greatly. As a result, the Council Executive Committee created a task force in September of 2004 to examine the future of Chief Obie Lodge and the Scouters' Mountain Property.

As part of their work the task force also reviewed the status of all 21 of our camps, and facilities. They reported that deferred maintenance is not just an issue at Scouters' Mountain, but that all our properties have significant challenges with maintenance funding. A separate properties taskforce determined that we should be spending between $800,000 and $1,000,000 a year, to keep our camps and facilities in good working condition. We currently average less than $250,000 per year.

The following sub-committees were assembled:

Chief Obie Lodge sub-committee
Program Impacts sub-committee
Financial Implications sub-committee
