([ Portland],[Or],[05/18/04])—Each year local Scouts of the Boy Scouts of America, Cascade Pacific Council conduct fundraisers to help pay their way for summer camp and other Scouting activities. The spring fundraiser is now complete and over $429,609 was raised by young, enthusiastic Scouts who are anxious to enjoy a variety of Scouting adventures.
Many Scouts took home prizes for their sales efforts . Every Scout who sold at least $64 worth of product was entered into a drawing for a mountain bike. The winner of the bike was 8-year-old Rick of Pack 144 out of Milwaukie, who also happens to be a district top seller for the North Clackamas District.
Rick Gannon Sr. said his son’s eyes got big and he had a huge smile on his face when he found out he had won the bike. “Selling the candy and stuff turned out to be easier than I thought it was going to be, but selling isn’t near as fun as winning the bike. I was excited to win the bike and proud to sell the most candy,” said 8-year-old Scout Rick .
Each unit earns 32% commission on all the products sold. Units also had an opportunity to win a $50 bonus by selling a minimum of $1,000 in product, increasing sales 10% over the 2003 minimum, submitting all forms in on time and having no returns.
Scout units that signed up by a “Early Bird” deadline were also entered into a drawing for $250 worth of “Scout Bucks” to pay for camp fees or to use in the Nor’West Scout Shop to purchase uniform items, camp gear and other Scouting items. The winner of this drawing was Thunderbird Troop 898 out of Portland. The Thunderbird District, which serves the Centennial, David Douglas, Parkrose and Reynolds School Districts as well as the Gresham and Sandy areas, beat out 18 other districts in the council by selling $87,068 worth of product.
The Chinook District, serving Cowlitz, Wahkiakkum and part of Columbia Counties had the largest dollar increase selling $7,023 more product than last year. The greatest percent increase was awarded to the Silver Star District serving North Clark County, the district recognized a 36% sales increase over the previous year.
