Hunger is a way of life for far too many in our country. It may seem ironic, but in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, millions of people each year are forced to choose between putting food on the table or paying for other necessities of life. An estimated 13 million people go to bed hungry each night.Through Good Turn for America, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, The Salvation Army, and thousands of other community organizations, we can work together to alleviate hunger in America.Oregon and Washington are states hard-hit by issues of hunger. Our council has assisted food pantries for many years, and will continue to do that and more. Beginning in 2004, our local council will participate in activities such as:Food drives
-
Expanding our Scouting for Food program to visit more homes and collect more food in December.
-
Encourage units to participate in collaborative food drives and collecting food donations for food pantries when they are needed in other times of the year.
Providing meals to the hungry.
-
Encouraging units to organize projects to assist agencies that provide meals to the needy by helping them prepare and serve the meals.
-
Encouraging units to helping deliver meals and food to the homebound and the elderly in conjunction with organizations such as Meals on Wheels.
