Shelter is one of the basics of life, yet a recent Urban Institute study estimates that 3.5 million people—one-third of those children—will experience homelessness in this country this year. Another study of homelessness in 27 U.S. cities found that 37 percent of all requests for emergency shelter went unmet due to lack of resources.
Thousands of organizations have dedicated themselves to addressing the problem of homelessness. Habitat for Humanity marshals volunteers and organizations to provide quality housing. The Salvation Army provides temporary shelter and basic necessities including food, clothing, and so much more.
By combining efforts through Good Turn for America, organizations such as these, and many others, we can help reduce homelessness in America.
Beginning in 2004, local Scouting units are encouraged to participate in activities such as:
Assisting organizations such as Habitat for Humanity that build homes for the needy, or organizations that provide home maintenance services for those in need. The need for simple, decent housing continues to grow in American communities large and small.
- Providing assistance as volunteers on Habitat for Humanity building projects.
- Assisting community beautification projects, including repainting homes and sprucing up the yards of the needy.
Assisting shelters and their occupants.
There are homeless shelters and missions, prisons, children's homes, shelters for battered women, and homes and hospitals for persons with mental health problems to name just a few. These not-for-profit shelters, and their occupants can be helped in many ways:
- Collecting clothing, toiletries, and supplies for people living in shelters.
- Collecting books and school supplies for children living in shelters.
- Collecting toys and gifts for children of prisoners, or those living in shelters.
- Conducting visits and reading programs for residents.
- Conducting entertainment programs for residents.
- Providing other volunteer services that improve the quality of shelter operations.
- Conducting a fund-raiser for a not-for-profit shelter.
