Be Prepared to Get Back to Camp!

Summer Camp 2021 will look a bit different this year, but we are confident we’ll get back to camp!  In this webinar, our Camping Team shares the latest contingency plans to help you and your Scouts safely enjoy Summer Camp this coming year. Please note: details shared here are as of February 24, 2021 and are subject to change. We expect to update this content as needed but please watch your email for additional updates and further details.

Please note the following “best practices” and next steps:

  • Make sure current unit leaders are listed on pack/troop reservation. Add people to our communication list with this form.  CAMP CONTACT FORM
  • Confirm attendance and adjust numbers on Tentaroo by March 1 (enter names of youth/adults online roster). Invite youth to attend summer camp (opportunity to re-enroll)
  • Collect and turn in $100/Scout by March 1 (Cub Camp deadline – May 1)
  • Communicate with your Pack/Troop parents so they know what’s up and you hear their concerns
  • Plan to attend next webinars, monitor monthly emailed updates
  • Have parents complete and submit special needs/scholarship applications. LEARN MORE
  • Invite adults and older youth to serve on camp staff. Staff can volunteer for a week or two, or be paid for an entire summer. LEARN MORE
  • Keep an eye on local vaccination schedules
  • Out of State Troops/Packs – 
    • Monitor travel restrictions w/airlines, bus, etc.
    • Early arrivals possible – if more than 250 miles away, ONLY with pre-arrangement, $75.

Current Working Assumptions as of March 31, 2021


Unit & Cohort Overview
  • Space, masking, outdoors – 2 of 3 at all times
  • Cohort Size – from 10 youth to full unit 
  • Scheduled arrival times – arrive as full cohorts only
  • Cohorts share sleeping area, eating area
  • One gets sick, isolate person/quarantine cohort
  • Masks throughout camp
  • Social distancing throughout camp
  • Cohort mask and social distancing lighter when together


Prescreening & Testing

We may require the following steps before and during camp: 

  • Pre-camp self quarantine/health checks/screening
  • Testing pre-camp
  • Arrival re-screening, low-cost rapid testing
  • Encourage vaccination, especially for staff and those at higher risk
  • Daily campsite health checks – LOG REQUIRED
  • Masking 
  • Assigned spaces / extra cleaning required
  • Post camp quarantine and reporting


Food Service
  • If dining hall style
    • Assigned, spaced tables/seats 
    • Cafeteria or pre-plated option
    • Lower capacity, increase air flow/spacing
    • Masks worn when not seated at the table
    • Areas will be sanitized between uses
  • In site meals and/or cooking at Camp Baldwin
  • Hand washing prior to all meals
  • Cub Scouts remain in assigned groups for all activities and meals
  • Masks worn in all activities except aquatics
    • Aquatics “buddies” must be from same cohort
  • Rigorous equipment cleaning may limit users/area capacity/activities
  • Off camp outings cohort only
  • Merit badge class size limited, Scouts may take 4 at most
  • Some merit badges not available
  • No campwide activities (flag, campfire, games)


Potential Changes

We are preparing for a multitude of options should rules and recommendations change for summer camp including:

  • Patrol-based models
  • Reduced capacity
  • Campsite meals (we prepare, you prepare)
  • Adult support of cleaning/program
  • Merit badge prerequisites taught online before camp
  • Experiential models – i.e. Desert Island scenario…Treasure Island mystery 
    • If the council (or State) cancels: we will over your payments to next year or you can receive a refund
    • After 3/1: If individual campers/troops/packs cancel, you’ll receive all but the the non-refundable $100/Scout deposit
    • 2 weeks from camp: No refunds except in case of illness
What if testing, vaccinations aren’t available?

We will continue to work with our Council COVID Task Force to make sure campers, leaders, and staff stay safe based on the conditions at the time of camp. Limited or expensive testing or vaccinations could challenge us.

How will older scouts be engaged?

Opportunities for troop development, leadership, mentoring younger scouts, service, hikes, “down time,” time with peers, and more exist at every camp.

Will adult numbers need to be reduced?

Adults leaders are needed to make Scouting go. Our camps often run close to capacity. IF State reduces capacity, we MAY need to ask packs and troops to send fewer to allow more youth to attend.
