What is BALOO?

This course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. BALOO training consists of an online pre-requisite component in addition to an overnight hands on practical. BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry our a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for a MINIMUM OF ONE adult on a Pack overnighter.

The online prerequisite training is available in the BSA Learn Center on My.Scouting

Why should I take BALOO?

Leaders who complete BALOO training are better prepared to plan pack den or pack overnight events.

You’ll learn how to make camping activities and outings fun. You’ll discover how to keep your Cub Scouts safe and entertained. And you’ll learn how to plan an event that’s rooted firmly in Cub Scouting’s principles.

Successful experiences in the outdoors make Cub Scouts — and their parents — more likely to keep coming back.

This Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) course will be held in conjunction with the Cascade Pacific Council Cub Scout Super Weekend. If you are attending with a Super Weekend unit, you should sleep and eat with that unit. If you are attending without a host troop, a campsite will be provided for you.

As part of the course, you are expected to sleep overnight Saturday evening in a tent you have setup, so please bring a tent and appropriate sleeping gear!

Saturday lunch, which you will prepare, will be provided as part of the BALOO course. All other meals will either be eaten with your host unit or, if you are not attending with a unit, with the Super Weekend and BALOO staffs in the Camp Clark dining hall.

BALOO consists of two components: online and hands-on. You’ll need to complete both — in order — to qualify as a “Trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader. The online prerequisite training is available in the BSA Learn Center on My.Scouting . Please complete the online training prior to arrival at camp.
