Program Planning

Prepare Your Scout Unit for an Incredible Year of Fun, Adventure and Advancement

Every unit should conduct a Program Planning Conference to develop a year-long calendar and unit budget. Program planning is a simple but critical part of your troop’s success. Development of an annual program plan provides direction, and a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in a job well done. Planning also makes the best possible use of your valuable volunteer time and yields a quality program for Scouts that will increase retention.

The following links will help you plan. If you know of a resource not in this list, please contact Carrie Hutchcraft, Program Assistant,at carrie.hutchcraft@scouting.org to share your idea!

New for 2021-22: Virtual Planning Guides

With all of the change and flux over the last year, we’ve developed a new, easy-to-use Google Slides deck that you can use for you unit planning purposes.

Monthly slides are set up with current council deadlines and reminders.

We’ll keep you updated with any changes or additional slides that you will be able to easily copy/paste into your Unit Planning Guide. (Watch your Compass Points email for updates.)

Here’s how it works:

  1. Click the buttons below for your unit type to go to the slide deck (Google account required)
  2. Click “File” >> “Make a Copy” >> “Entire Presentation”
  3. Change the titles on the title slide
  4. Themed, monthly slides are set up with current council and district events and deadlines.
  5. Add your internal events, deadlines, links and more as-needed.
  6. Slides include links to resource for each event/deadline/theme.
  7. Click “Share” to share your Slides with other parents/Scouts. (We recommend clicking “Change to anyone with the link” to share with others.
